Text replacement is just really bad on macOS. tldr Mission control != Alt+Tab and is highly inefficient. And I'd still have to manually click and move my mouse to which virtual desktop I want from the list rather than doing it efficiently with one keystroke, especially if I have one virtual desktop for every app. Ideally, a virtual desktop is for two separate workflows (I might have say one for programming/development, one for stocks and software, one for video editing, etc.), and NOT for any number of random apps from a Calculator to Chess to Excel. Is there a way to make something "make active window by hovering over" like you can easily do in windows whenever you hover over something with the mouse? I shouldn't need to click on something randomly to make this the active window.ĮDIT: I'm seeing a lot of comments about using the Mission control and workspaces (virtual desktops), but my problem with using virtual desktops over Alt+Tab behavior is that it's disorderly to scatter 10 apps across 10 virtual desktops. I purchased something for MacOS that does similar, but it interferes with other shortcuts and often lags or doesn't even work. Windows+1,2,3, etc for opening apps was super helpful for me. ? Please note that I indeed have used Rectangle (as others have suggested here), but it's no where near as clean as on windows and doesn't work sometimes (has any else noticed this or found ways to fix this?). How come I can't swipe up, to the left, or to the right with windows like in Windows to make half screen, full screen, etc. Perhaps this seems insignificant, but this slows down my workflow tremendously. I'm aware about Mission control and virtual desktops (I think macOS calls these "workspaces"), but it's highly inefficient as it requires you to find the app and click on it or in the case of virtual desktops requires you to jump across potentially dozens of screens. I use Alt+Tab probably more than any other shortcut so not having this is depressing. AltTab (a third party software) is buggy and doesn't even recognize some of the apps which makes me want to not use it at all. I also hate the lack that you can't see previews of the apps like in windows. I'm aware of Cmd+Tab and Cmd+~, but it's insane that after you minimize an app that it won't appear it this AltTab cache to go back to. I realize I'm asking this in the Apple sub so if anyone can also share their experiences with switching from Windows that would be great. Has any other Windows user also switched to macOS and realized he or she prefers the Windows OS significantly insofar as they would even sacrifice some performance and battery life? What would you recommend? Is there any Windows laptop you think is comparable? I do not do anything that's requires insane performance outside having up to 40 tabs open and also compiling rather large programs. I wanted to love the M1, but I just can't fathom spending the rest of my life without some of these extremely basic things. I'm so torn on what to do as I can still return my Macbook, but I need a new laptop and I don't think any Windows laptop can compete on performance. but nothing can recreate the ease of use of the Windows OS in my opinion. I've even used third party ones like Spectacle, AltTab, etc. I use a ton of shortcuts and little-known features to make life easier and I've found MacOS to have lackluster functionality in terms of shortcuts which used to be so banal in Windows like Alt+Tab or simple swiping to the side to make multiple displays. But I wish some of that budget went to software improvements. It's outstanding! I also love the battery life and Unix terminal. My opinion: I absolutely love the performance on the M1. I've been a Windows user for most of my life (with only occasional use on my brother's), but I just got the new Macbook M1 due to my thoughts on ARM architecture being the future.
